Music Video Analysis Task

The first music I have chosen to analyse is Serj Tankian- Lie Lie Lie (2007). The genre of his music is predominantly Alternative, Experimental Rock. What I like about this music video is the fact that it doesn't use people and employs an animated style which is something that I find deviates from the norm of a music video. I also think that by using animated characters engages the listener and makes them want to follow the storyline. What I dont like about the storyline is that it is about love which I find is something cliche, the lyric that reinforces this is 'She took my hand and I let her go'. On the other hand the way that the storyline is portrayed through the video is very unusual and the by using the singer in a different manner adds a certain authenticity to the video and allows the audience to relate to him. I also think that this video  creates the idea that the artist is very unusual, crazy and manic. When watching this video It reminded me a lot of Darren Brown mainly as I felt I was in another peculiar world. I think that the audience would be someone who enjoys listening to rock and have possibly loved and lost. I also think that the person who would listen to this kind of music would also listen to Red hot chilli peppers, Muse and possibly System of a down mainly because they have a similar style and employ a rebellious ethic.

The second song I have chosen is O-Zone-Dragostea din tei (2003). The genre of this group is Pop and electronica. I do not like this music video as I feel that the lyrics which when translated are all about love do not bear a resemblance to the video at all. I also find this music video very basic and very childish. I feel that the images we are shown in the video do not match and create a very confused meaning for the audience, however thinking about it this may have been done to show the audience how the artists are versatile.  What i find is effective in this video is that after each lyric the shot cuts which is something that I could possibly use as it will make filming easier. Another element of this music video which I like is how there is a variation between reality and animation, I believe this makes the artists look playful and fun. I would say that the audience who would enjoy this kind of music video would be females between the ages of 16-onwards they would be females mainly because they may have an attraction towards the artists depicted in the video. I also think think they would enjoy listening to european music and enjoy listening to Bass hunter, Las ketchup. The reason I think they would like these songs is mainly because they have very simple melodies and can be considered clubbing songs. Having watched this video I get the impression that the artists are very youthful due to the animations used, I also feel that they are very camp due to the clothing choices.

The next video I have chosen is by the Eurythmics- Sweet Dreams (1983). I think this video has a very reminiscent element to it, I believe this is achieved through the use is synthesisers which was the essence of music in the 80's it is for these reasons I think it is different and there is an enigmatic element to the video as it also dosen't have a storyline and simply shows a range of images and shots. The costumes used is something that I could think about when shooting my video as Annie Lennox is makes the audience think why is that and the fact she is wearing a hindu religious symbol on her forehead also creates enigma. Another element of this video I find interesting is Annie Lennox's striking androgyny image is what makes this video so different. I also like the way that in the beginning of the video the music is in sync with the video as this makes the song more powerful.  I think that in order for this song to work it is vital that it does not have a narrative as I feel that all the enigma is lost and revealed to the audience. I think that the kind of audience that would listen to music like this would be slightly older as they would have been around when this song was released, I believe that it would be a mixture of males and females they would also listen to artists such as Bon Jovi, Bonnie Tyler and Pet shop boys mainly because they are all from the same decade. I also like the way the enigma is consistent in the use of locations as the picture on my right is very unusual and has no meaning, this is an idea that I could experiment with and see if it works or not. Another thing I looked at was the lyrics they also create mystery the first line does this: 'Sweet Dreams are made of this'. It allows the audience to think what could the dreams be made of. The impression that is generated of Annie Lennox in the video would be that she is very peculiar, she is an independent strong woman this is due to the fact that she wears a suit and has a cane which is an indication that she is powerful. I would also say that she is very bold, this is denoted by her bright orange hair.

The next song I have chosen is by Josh Kumra ft. K-Koke- Helicopters and Planes (2012). The genre of this song has a very blues style to it mainly because of the vocals which create a very sad tone. What I like about the camera work in the video is that it has a very rough, handheld element at times which makes it very gritty and original in that sense. As well as being handheld it is shot from a high angle which  I find to be very unique.  I think this has been done to create the illusion that we in a plane or helicopter looking down on Josh Kumra singing. I also like the use of real locations (Tube station) this allows the audience to bond with the artist and this is reinforced by the close up throughout the video. I would prefer a song like this not to have a storyline as I feel that it looses the emotion and the passion is not the same. It allows the audience to constantly follow the song and not the storyline. However the title of the song does match some of the images we see. In the beginning we are immediately shown Josh Kumra looking at the window at a plane. In that particular shot I also like the natural lighting used this emphasises the whole depressing, subdued image that the artist is going for. I would say that the audience for this song would be males between the ages of 17-onwards as it shows how hard life can be and tells us how we should be optimistic this is reinforced by this lyric: ' Live life for the moment, my life ain't promise in the morning. I think this because youngsters could relate to this song and many males also like K-Koke mainly because he is an underground grime artist and is known for his unique flow and real lyrics . I would say that the other artists this audience would listen to would be Professor Green, Mic Righteous and Wretch 32
Overall I would say that from this music video I think that Josh Kumra is a very average person mainly because of the clothing he wears e.g. Jeans, Jacket and Trainers. I would also say that he is very subdued and an intellectual person mainly because I believe that the title of his song Helicopters and Plane has a deeper philosophical meaning.

The next song that I am going to look at is by Gnarls Barkley- Crazy (2006). The genre of this song is Neo soul, Alternative Hip-Hop. What I like about this music video is that how it uses the ink blot test in a creative and symmetrical way, I find it very soothing and relaxing. I also think that the way the camera zooms in, and changes direction engages the viewer and draws them into the verisimilitude. When I viewed this video I couldn't help feeling like I was in the 60's I feel that it has a very groovy and funky look. The audience that would listen to this kind of music would be both male and females and would be between the ages of 18-onwards mainly because this song is very slow and relaxing something a slightly older audience would be more interested in. I also think that they would listen to Amy Winehouse, Nelly Futardo and Cee Lo green. From looking at this video I get the impression that Gnarls Barkley is very cool, relaxed and understands his music mainly because when you listen to the song there is a lot of variation in the sound and it has a very old school feel. THis could be something I could look for when composing my song.

The next video I will look at is Franz Ferdinand- Take Me Out (2004). The genre of this song is Indie Rock, Post- Punk Revival. What I like about this video is the fact that it has a lot of animation. I like the fact how each image is cut to the bass drum, I find that this unifies the song. I also like the way the band have been incorporated into the song is very unique and original, I especially like the way there is a contrast between the animation and reality. The colour pallet used in the video is very natural and rusty. I think that this also creates a very raw, unvarnished look for the band. I also like the way that they are featured in the song, I think if I consider to use the band in the song I should definitely think about how I could get them involved in more creative ways, I could explore this when editing. There is also no storyline in this music video, I personally like this mainly because it allows the audience to focus on the band and build a relationship with them and informs them about their personality. I thin the band are very fun, crazy and wild this is evident in the special effects used in their video e.g. the mechanised foot. I also find the graphics and the industrial look very appealing to a male audience who enjoy listening to niche music and are possibly early adopters. I also think that they will enjoy artists such as The Kooks, Foo Fighters and The Black Keys.

The final song that I am going to look at is by SBTRKT- Wildfire (2011), the genre of this song is Electonica, Ambient House, Post Dubstep, Synth Pop. What I find very different about this video is, that everything moves backwards which is a very different technique, this is what I think is different about this video compared to others. I also think that that the location used creates enigma and sets a certain tone, it employs an impressionistic style which works well. Personally I prefer it when music videos do not have a storyline as I believe it drifts more and more towards cliches. It also allows the audience to create their own opinion and does not anchor any specific meanings.  With this video the use of a chinese woman has no association to the song and it is enigmatic and puzzling to the audience. I also think that the song is loosely in time with the  music.I also think that the use of the mask is very unusual prop and something that I could consider using in my own video. What I also like about this music video is the simplicity of it, a lot of the shots are extreme close ups which create a very supernatural element to the video. I would say that the audience for this kind of song would be mainly females and males as it has it has a lot of synthesisers and is bass heavy which is something that males tend to like in songs and I believe that females will appreciate this song mainly because the vocalist is female. I think the age of the audience would be ages 17-onwards mainly because I feel the music video is slightly disturbing. I think that the other artists the audience would listen to would be The xx, Cassius and Little Dragon. From looking at this video I feel that the artist is very unique, niche and unusual.
